I speak for I believe a majority when I say that the ending of Secret Invasion wasn’t exactly what many thought it was going to be. It was one of those moments that felt as if we had the ingredients for the recipe, yet the final meal just didn’t quite turn out right. However, there was one thing that stood out amongst everything else, which is the very real truth that the Skrull invasion isn’t over in the MCU. So what comes next? A movie? A second season? Layered into other works? Let’s get into it.
The most logical progression would be to create a second season of Secret Invasion, allowing the seasons to act as different phases of the invasion itself. While the Skrulls are back to being seen as the victims, anyone cornered and made to feel immense fear will start to fight back. The Skrulls will fight, as we know Sonya is going to back G’iah, so the bigger question will be how intense are they going to get? Are we talking Gravik-level intense? Making the Skrulls the bad guys again will be the only way to make the invasion appear life threatening to fans of the MCU. It would be cool to see Sonya and G’iah take on season two in a similar way to how Fury and Talos came together in season one and continue the fight for the Skrulls on Earth, even if they are perceived as the ‘bad’ guys.
Another option is to have a movie around the Secret Invasion plot of the comics. Again, this is going to be contingent on making the Skrulls the bad guys once again. If they do this, we can see some of the big names come into play, such as the entire Ant-Man group, Dr. Strange, and Captain America. Due to how large the storyline is in the comics, pulling it onto the big screen would make the event in the MCU much larger than just keeping it on the small screen. While we don’t have anything specific slated for the Secret Invasion storyline, option C might allow us to marry two of these thoughts together into one.
The final option, option c, and the one that is most likely going to happen just with what is coming up, is that the invasion becomes layered into some other content until we are past some of the big Multiverse plots. Things such as The Marvels, Armor Wars, maybe even Cap 4 might see the Skrull invasion as a C plot. As we move through Phases 5 and then 6 and the Multiverse story continues to be the main event, we are unlikely going to see the focus shift to the Skrulls until after all this wraps up. If Marvel really does want to make this a big event, it seems pretty unlikely that it will be fitting in before things like Kang Dynasty come around. Keep in mind, the Skrulls have been here since the 90s, so just because the world is more aware of them now doesn’t mean that expedites the story. Not to mention, we don’t have a confirmed timeline of when things are happening since Phase 4 started, just a general idea of the order of content. Many other things could technically take place prior to Secret Invasion, including Multiverse stuff. Lastly, Multiverses colliding, I think, are definitely a bigger problem than Skrulls, so if we will get a bigger event, it will have to be after the Avengers spend their time taking down Kang.
Before we wrap up, there’s one more thing to address regarding the next installment of Secret Invasion. Nick Fury has left Earth to be part of the Kree/Skrull negotiations. While this is unlikely, if those negotiations go in a positive direction for the Skrulls, Secret Invasion might morph into a different storyline. Theoretically, if the Skrulls can make peace with the Kree and acquire a new home elsewhere, there’s no stopping Marvel from having the Skrulls reinvade Earth, similar to the actual comic book series. They could do so out of anger or resentment of their treatment while on the planet and would then come in as hostile aliens. We could quickly align with an already established and popular comic line and things could get very interesting for the Secret Invasion storyline as if mixes with our heroes.
At the moment, we can only speculate what will come next and in what format. I advocate for you all to assume option C is what Marvel is going to go with until they have the time to pull together a more fleshed out and bigger story. We will be likely revisiting a lot of this conversation post-The Marvels, out this November. Until then, keep up with our weekly podcast episodes, as Marvel just blew your mind, so let’s talk about it.
