Movies that take place during a holiday season are often disputed on whether they belong in the same category as holiday-specific films. It’s a tale that is best known and debated through the film Die Hard, a debate that has torn groups apart for years. But the MCU has its own type of debate like this, stemming back from Phase 2 with Iron Man 3. Prior to Hawkeye and the Guardians Special Presentation, Iron Man 3 was the only piece of content to take place during a holiday. So it poses the question: Is Iron Man 3 a Christmas movie?
First, you have to ask yourself what you define as a Christmas movie. There isn’t a literal definition of what makes something a holiday movie, which is what leaves the question so up for debate. Is it based on the genre of the movie? When it premiered? If it has a certain jolly good fellow whose favorite catchphrase is “ho, ho, ho” in it? Or is it much more simple than that?
The setting of Iron Man 3 we know is during the holiday season, confirmed by various set decorations and even some of the conversations that take place. It also helps that at one point Tony literally says the words “Merry Christmas”. I mean, a whole part of the plot line has to deal with New Year’s Eve, which literally follows in Christmas’ footsteps by only a week. But on top of that, Killian, one could argue, is quite literally a ghost from Tony’s Christmas past who has returned to haunt him for the poor choices he has made. Then, through this journey, Tony corrects his ways and becomes a better person before the end of the film, much like our buddy Scrooge.
On top of this, some pretty important people at Disney have confirmed that they think Iron Man 3 can solidly be considered a Christmas movie, although Disney+ seemingly disagreed. The film didn’t make the holiday list last year, even though Hawkeye did. So with all this being said, what’s the verdict?
I have to say that I personally think, after looking at the facts, Iron Man 3 can be considered a Christmas movie. Between some of the plot similarities to A Christmas Carol and the fact it is very clearly set during the holiday season, it checks off enough to earn a spot. Besides, there isn’t a rule that says action movies can’t be in on the holiday cheer. So that’s it, folks, the debate is settled (at least for now), and we can all enjoy the holiday season with a little less to worry about. Happy Holidays everyone and don’t forget to watch Iron Man 3 during your Christmas movie lineups (if that’s your thing)!
