We are only weeks away from Ant-Man 3, where we journey into the Quantum Realm. Most of the film will be set in that realm, but how much do we really know about it? The first time we even get a feeling of what the Quantum Realm is in the first Ant-Man film and it is only briefly. We also know Scott was exploring the Quantum Realm when the Snap took place, and it helped to play a part in how they used time travel. But now we are really jumping into it, so let’s do our own journey to understand the Quantum Realm.
For comic fans, the Quantum Realm might be more familiar to you by a different name: the Microverse. These should be understood as parallel dimensions, similar to what we know of the Multiverse so far. In fact, according to comic law, when you travel into a Microverse, you are actually entering a different universe.
As the Quantum Realm has always been this interesting “thing” within the MCU, it was easy to ignore and to try not to understand. But in reality, it’s a lot easier than we all think. While the Pym particles and the science behind them gets people like Scott in the Quantum Realm, and therefore into another universe, we also obviously saw this with Dr. Strange and the mystic arts. All of this is a lot more similar than it is different. With this understanding of the simple way the Quantum Realm works, let’s look a little closer at the details that we know about it.
For one, while time and space move differently in the Quantum Realm, a human, can still age. We can look at Janet van Dyne for this, as she still aged during her time there. We also see her come out with some interesting abilities that she uses on Ghost. She harnesses some Quantum power, which she gained during her time in the Realm. This means we have to assume that this is a possibility for all the travelers into the Quantum Realm we see in the Ant-Man 3 trailer. Lastly, don’t forget that time works very differently in the Quantum Realm and that time vortexes exist. While we didn’t get much information on those, I have to assume it means they suck up an unwilling traveler and spits them out at a completely different time and place. And I mean completely different.
I will say the Quantum Realm being its own universe makes a lot of sense regarding Kang, but it also really stresses me out. This Kang has been sucking up Quantum power for years, only making himself more and more powerful. And clearly, whatever way Scott and crew get out of the Quantum Realm brings him with them. Sending them all prayers.
I hope this little bit helped you feel more confident in your understanding of the Quantum Realm. Realizing the Realm is just another universe has definitely placated some worries I had. Now you’re ready to see Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantaminium, so let’s see how the world of the MCU explodes after this one!
